EXTRA CREDIT WHAT MAKES A GOOD SLOGAN? ex. "Im Loving It" 50 points

You will have a very rare opportunity to complete an extra credit assignment. 50 points

You will need to complete it during the Spring Break.

¢A WORD FROM OUR SPONSOR
INTRODUCTION  Did you know that the average American is bombarded by over 3,000 selling messages (advertisements and commercials) per day?. How do we handle all these messages? How do we separate fact from fiction, information from emotion?
¢Probably the most important and most commonly used selling technique or persuasive device used in advertising is the concept of repetition. The name of the product may be repeated throughout the advertisement, and we all know that slogans, jingles and advertising characters are used over and over again.
¢
TASK

· You will create slogans for specific products and explain why your slogans are appropriate for the products.

PROCESS
¢
¢
Step 1.  Internet Activity. Using the Internet, you will need to do the following tasks.
a) List five slogans that Coca Cola used in 1934. HINT: Try going to Guy
Gagnon's Coca Cola Web Page at http://www.synapse.net/~ggagnon/welcome.html
¢b) List five of the top 10 Volkswagen advertising slogans. HINT:  Go to EXCITE at http://excite.com/ and do a keyword search.
¢
STEP 2. NOW Create Some Original Slogans of Your Own. Select three of the following products.
A. Give a name to the product.
B. Make an image from clip art
C.. Then create an appropriate slogan for each one. (7)
  1. ¢Candy bar
  2. ¢Shampoo
  3. ¢Jeans
  4. ¢Chewing Gum
  5. ¢Automobile
  6. ¢Athletic Shoes
  7. ¢YOUR CHOICE!
¢
STEP 3. Explain your reason for creating each slogan. Why are your  slogans appropriate for your product?
You will POST step 2 and 3 on the board when you come back to class.  Make sure it is presented/typed on paper.  You will present you slogans and reasons.
¢

JOURNAL ENTRY. In your notebook, reflect on what you have learned from this lesson about using the Internet to gather information.
1. What makes a good slogan?
¢2. Why are some slogans memorable and others not?
What advertising strategy is best for reinforcing one of the above products and the slogan?
¢
¢3. Do you purchase products based on slogans? Why or why not?
I look forward to seeing your creative ideas!!
